The Townsend site features an underslung, rubble-core wall perched on the east face of a jagged ridge. The wall is situated immediately below a large gap between rock outcrops. A defensive function seems implausible, given the wall affords no protection from the west - the most feasible approach. The gap above the wall is oriented due west (270°). The position of the wall in conjunction with the alignment of the gap suggest the Townsend site may have functioned as an equinox [sunset] marker.
